PhotoWork Foundation Elects Christopher McCall to Board of Directors
(New York–May 2, 2025) – PhotoWork Foundation announces the appointment of Christopher McCall to its Board of Directors. McCall was elected at the April meeting of the board.
Board Chair Peter Kayafas said, “We are thrilled that Chris is joining our team. His unique skills, knowledge about the photography community, and incredible energy will no doubt be immeasurable assets to our sustained effort to provide education, guidance, mentorship, and resources to early and mid-career photographers while building an engaged and diverse community of people who love photography and support photographers.”
Christopher McCall is a curator, advisor, and arts leader whose practice bridges museum presentation and artist advocacy. After earning his MFA in photography from California College of the Arts in 2002—where he studied under Jim Goldberg and Larry Sultan—he taught for seven years before joining Pier 24 Photography in 2009 as its founding director. Over the next decade, McCall helped shape the organization’s mission and operating principles, opening its doors in 2010 and overseeing thirteen exhibitions. During that time, Pier 24 Photography became known for its thoughtful, inventive exhibitions and supporting emerging artists alongside established photographers. Its intimate, site-specific shows, free of wall text and accessible by appointment, were celebrated for their curation and presentation, inviting undistracted contemplation and deepening viewers’ engagement with the photographic medium. He also spearheaded the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program, a collaboration with California College of the Arts that continues to bring emerging and established photographers into dialogue with students. He has curated exhibitions at the Aperture Foundation in New York, with shows that have traveled to the Rencontres d’Arles in Arles, France, the High Museum in Atlanta, and the Bombas Gens Centre d’Art in Valencia, Spain.
In 2020, McCall founded Parallax, an artist agency and advisory in San Francisco that supports photographers through every stage of their practice—from book projects and museum placements to community engagement and studio development. At Parallax, he collaborates closely with artists to chart career paths, foster meaningful relationships, and advance their professional practice, while also advising collectors and institutions on acquisitions and exhibitions.
